Genesis 13: Parents
Generosity and Peace
Genesis 13:9 (New Living Translation)
"The whole countryside is open to you. Take your choice of any section of the land you want, and we will separate. If you want the land to the left, then I’ll take the land on the right. If you prefer the land on the right, then I’ll go to the left."
Imagine your two children fighting over who gets the bigger slice of pie. You notice the tense atmosphere, and it's clear that a peaceful solution needs to be found.
The situation between Abram and Lot in Genesis 13:9 mirrors this scenario. The land could not support both their herds, so Abram, although the elder with the right to choose first, gave Lot the privilege to choose his portion. Abram chose peace and demonstrated generosity in this situation.
As parents, we are called to model this same spirit of generosity and desire for peace in our homes. It's not about who gets the bigger piece of pie, but about showing love and grace towards one another. Encourage your children to embrace generosity over greed, to value peace above possession.
The next time a similar situation arises in your home, gently remind your children of Abram's example. Teach them that the heart of a generous person is richer than the hands full of possessions. God's way is the way of peace and generosity, a lesson valuable beyond measure.
