The Sacred Gift of Rest

Genesis 2:2-3 (New Living Translation)
"On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation."

In the hurly-burly of family life, picture a Sunday afternoon where you and your children are sprawled out in the living room, books and toys scattered around, each of you engrossed in activities you love. The usual hustle is replaced with a peaceful hum. No chores or homework, just rest.

This peaceful picture reflects the essence of Genesis 2:2-3. After six days of creation, God modeled something powerful - the sacredness of rest. Even the Almighty, who neither slumbers nor sleeps, chose to rest, setting a rhythm for us to follow.

As parents, we are entrusted with the beautiful responsibility of instilling this rhythm in our children's lives. Let's turn our Sundays or any set day into a 'sabbath' of sorts, a day distinctly different from the rest. A day to set aside the busyness, to pause, to enjoy God's creation, and to rest.

On these special days, engage with your children in activities that rejuvenate, like reading a book, painting, or even simply lying under the open sky, counting clouds. Let them know that rest is not merely absence of work, but a sacred act of worship, a divine gift, a holy echo of God's love for balance and peace in our lives.
